Are you fans of any of the shows like the Biggest Loser, Celebrity Fit Club, Shaq’s Big Challenge, and Celebrity Makeover?
Is it safe to say that the American public is getting duped into believing that in a span of viewing a 30 minute program (this is excluding all the commercials and the actual shows “fluff” pieces), morbidly obese people are able to lose enormous amounts of weight?
Am I crazy or is anyone else seeing how unrealistic these shows really are? On the Biggest Loser, overweight contestants team up with celebrity trainers to shape up and improve their lives.
I don’t have a problem with that. I actually commend people for making this tremendous effort.
The problem I have is that it almost makes it seem too easy!
Shows like these are a tremendous help in making the public aware that leading an unhealthily lifestyle is destructive. They can be great to almost scare people into realizing the consequences of eating poorly, being inactive, smoking and drinking.
But, when the average couch potato, nacho eating, overworked, overweight American finally decides to make an effort and change their life; they fall flat on their face.
Once they realize that weight loss and staying healthy is a lifelong commitment, and not something that can just “happen” over night, frustration will set in. (Hey, it took a long time for your body to get there…it’s going to take almost as long, and a lot of effort to get rid of it too.) After the frustration comes the disappointment, then discouragement, and finally disgust.
Unfortunately, we live in a world of “quick fixes”.
Everyone wants everything to happen yesterday. If there is a right way to do something, there has to be a faster way too…right?
First we had the 60 minute workout…someone made it quicker. Now we had the 45 minute workout. Then the 30 minute workout…then the 15 minute workout. The last time I checked, there was a workout that lasted 3 ENTIRE MINUTES!!!
Desire is only a starting point for all achievements…hard work, dedication and effort are what’s needed to get you there.
What are your thoughts?
