“If I’d know I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”
Did you ever wonder why some people have that ideal figure – the trim and taught body, the chiseled chest, the ‘buns of steel”, the tree trunk thighs, the rock hard abs? And then there are others who seem to be overflowing way beyond the top of their waistlines.
I like to call this the “Muffin Top” vs. the “Six Pack.”
A muffin top, for those of you who don’t know, is a person whose stomach, back and waist are hanging over their pants. Think of a soft, mushy, every expanding muffin spilling over the top of a baking pan and I think you will get a better idea of what I’m talking about.
With all the information that is out there today; the Internet, blogs, newspapers, magazines, DVD’s, CD’s and all kinds of “get fit quick” products just a credit card and a phone call away, it’s no wonder that there is only a very small percentage of the population can flaunt that six pack?
I see people from all walks of life coming in and out of fitness facilities week after week, month after month and year after year. If’ I was to guess, I’d say that 99% of them are not getting the results they initially sought. Why? Misinformation, lies, half truths, myths, all comes to mind when answering that question.
Everyone believes that they know how to get the elusive six pack, but few truly do.
Most people assume that in order to get a midsection to be envied by all; you would hang out around the ab machines. The problem is that couldn’t be further from the truth.
You will rarely ever see people with a defined midsection on one of those machines because they know that to get a six-pack, they need to blast the larger muscle groups. The uninformed unfortunately will try to ‘spot isolate’ their waist line and not realize this is just wasting valuable energy, time and effort.
If you just target the large muscles of the body (the legs, chest, and back ), the abdominals will automatically be used. Then, combine that with moderate cardio, add in some proper nutrition and you will turn your body into a fat burning machine.
Remember, body fat is stored energy (or fuel) that sits in the body and isn’t used unless there is a need for it. The more new muscle a body has, the more energy it needs and the higher it’s metabolism will be…ALL DAY LONG.
So, if you aren’t using all the muscles in your body during an exercise program, change your routine. You will be pleasantly surprised at the new you that will appear. Then when it’s time to take your shirt off there will be no need to suck in your stomach and hope no one notices the unsightly bulges.
