Oprah’s weight problem…who’s kidding who?

January 7, 2009 by Billy Carney

I guess some people consider this big news?

I read short article today about Oprah Winfrey explaining her “rationalization” of why she is as big as a house. oprah

Now, I’m not a fan of Oprah, nor am I someone who dislikes her.  Truthfully, I don’t even follow her.  But you can’t miss her due to her overwhelmingly large fan base, her television show, her magazines, her books and her international celebrity status.

What I don’t understand is the “on again-off again” so-called News about her body weight.  Let’s face facts…she’s overweight.

So what!

Half of America is overweight too but you don’t keep hearing them complaining. Unfortunately, most of them do not have the means to do as much about it as Oprah has done.

She’s lost large amounts of weight, followed a very public liquid diet, tried just about every other diet after diet after diet, and even trained and ran  in a marathon.

Apparently, she had told her millions of viewers on a recent program that “it doesn’t mean anything if you can’t control your eating (and) fit into your close…I can’t believe that with all the accomplishments, I’m still talking about weight.”

You know what?  I can’t believe it either.

I give her so much credit for her accomplishments in life and for her ability to have so many people eager to hear every word that comes out of her mouth.  But, for a woman who has more money than God, more opportunities to have access to the best minds in the health and fitness industry, more fitness professionals willing to walk over each other to offer their services to her…she’s still overweight.  Now that’s a problem!

Let’s look at some of her reasons on what went wrong.  She blames some of weight gain on her recent thyroid problem.  Out of all the reasons I’ve heard, this is the only legitimate one that isn’t, for the most part, controllable by her.  Thyroid issues are an unfortunate problem for many and it does cause a person to gain weight. It also makes it difficult to lose weight.  I imagine she has many physicians trying to help her on that issue.

But the other reasons are all controllable.

She says she has stress. Well…welcome to the real world.

I’d imagine that about 99.9% of America has stress right about now.  People are losing their jobs, their financial situation is plummeting due to the problems on Wall Street, marriages are collapsing and people are going bankrupt.

But Oprah has stress so I guess she assumes she stands alone with that issue.

Anyone who has all the responsibilities she has definitely leads a stressful life.  But she has to have an outlet to alleviate that problem.  Again, she has the means to have physicians, dietitians, nutritionist, personal trainers, and any other practitioner out there who can assist a person dealing with stress.  Most people can’t afford these luxuries.

She says she’s sleep deprived.  Well, here’s a simple solution…Get Some Sleep!!!

Here was the biggest cop-out of all.  She says that it ultimately came down to “loving her body”.  “Your overweight body doesn’t crave food, it craves love.”

Talk about ground-breaking news hot off the press.  Wow!  I need to sit down after reading that one.

Now don’t misjudge me.  This article wasn’t meant to bash Oprah, but I just couldn’t help putting my two cents worth in. I feel it’s so ridiculous to pick up a newspaper, go online, read a magazine, turn on the television and hear about Oprah’s weight problem.

There are so many people struggling with their weight who do not have the opportunities to hire professionals who could easily help.  So, I find her situation to be just plain sad…but it’s not news.

So for all of you, who are struggling with so many issues that are out there today, please don’t use Oprah as a beacon of leadership to solve your problems.

She is very successful at many things.  Weight loss isn’t one of them.  And that’s primarily her fault.  If she really wanted to, and I suspect deep down she really doesn’t, she could lose the weight and keep it off.

But please, stop telling everyone about it.  It’s no longer interesting.  It’s no longer considered a current event.  And it’s no longer a “News” item.

Find a certified fitness professional and do everything he tells you to do.  Then make it a lifestyle choice. Not something you do for a little while then disregard.

Absolutely! It has gotten ridiculous how every little thing Oprah does is “news”. Her weight is her problem; we don’t need an explanation or a long drawn out cavalcade of people to tell us about this issue of hers. I, for one, could give a flip.
