General Mills Turned Me Into A Drug Addict

May 18, 2009 by Billy Carney

Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal“Park your butt in that seat and eat your breakfast.”  That’s usually what the little voice inside my head says to me each morning as I get ready for work. It’s so easy to just wake up, shower and run out the door without putting something substantial into your body.

Now thanks to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many who are already finding excuses not to eat breakfast will have serious doubts about following through on this plan of action.

How many people do you know; yourself included; who don’t feel the need to eat one of the most important meals of the day?

Every morning I have a bowl of my favorite cereal; Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat.  I slice up a few strawberries…add a half a cup of 2 % milk, throw in three or four scrambled egg whites with whole wheat toast and I’m ready to head out into the world and help shape people’s lives.

But what I read the other day shocked my world.
The FDA has stated that Cheerios is a…(Wait For It…)

…It’s a DRUG!!!

Yep, leave it to the government to screw up something else that wasn’t in need of fixing.
Whoever thought that your morning breakfast could be bad for you?

Cheerios has been around since 1941 and NOW they are telling us is a drug???

I seriously wonder what these people are smoking sometimes.

I WAS A DRUG ADDICT

just_say_no_smallAccording to claims made on the back of the box, the FDA has determined that Cheerios is promoting conditions that cause it to be a drug.

I loved this cereal for years for many reasons. One of the biggest is that it tries to do something about coronary heart disease.   It claims that when eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, eating two servings a day will help reduce bad cholesterol by four percent in six weeks.

One of the best selling cereals coming out of the General Mills factories is claiming that this product is intended to be used to lower cholesterol and prevent, lessen or treat the disease hypercholesterolemia and to treat and prevent coronary heart disease.

Due to this information and its intended uses, the FDA  is throwing up the red flag and saying that  it’s a drug.

But that’s not all.  They also say that Cheerios is a “NEW” drug because it has not been “recognized as safe and effective for use in preventing or treating hypercholesterolemia or coronary heart disease.”

What’s the big deal about breakfast anyway?

cheerios= drugsBreakfast on a regular basis is one of the key behaviors people looking to be successful at losing weight need to focus on.

According to the National Weight Control Registry, eating breakfast on a regular basis will deter people to snack later in the morning or over eat at lunch.

Skipping breakfast should never be an option for many reasons.

  • Breakfast restores sugar levels after up to 12 hours of not eating.
  • It is extremely difficult to get all of your necessary daily nutrients without breakfast.
  • Adults who skip breakfast are less mentally and physically efficient for longer periods during the day.
  •  People who eat breakfast are more successful at losing weight and sticking to a diet.
  • Athletes who skip breakfast train less effectively.
  • Eating breakfast can raise metabolism by as much as 10 percent.
  • People who eat breakfast regularly are more likely to rate their health as “excellent” or “good.”
  • Eating breakfast has been shown to increase concentration.
  • Eating a bigger meal in the morning and a smaller meal at night optimizes your daily energy levels.

If you were having any doubts this information should clearly prove to you why you need to start your day off right. Just by waking up a few minutes early can change your health so much.
Sadly, it looks as if we are all going to have to find a new breakfast cereal very soon.

Even thought General Mills claims that Cheerios has been FDA-approved for 12 years and has had its message stating that “it can lower your cholesterol four percent in six weeks” for more than two years, the FDA is still looking to take it off the shelves.

Apparently, General Mills may not legally market Cheerios unless it applies for approval as a new drug or changes its labels.
