How to deal with fat, lazy and out of shape co-workers who want to sabotage your fitness goals.

May 22, 2009 by Billy Carney

I wanted to put together a really quick blog post and talk about some of the obstacles at work that can really screw up your fitness results…and I looking to hear some of your horror stories as well.

Before I started working as a personal trainer, I spent my nine to five hours surrounded by people who never even thought of stepping foot into a gym.  If I even brought up the idea of looking for a workout partner, I’d actually get weird stares and be asked if I was feeling alright!

woman licking fingersHow about you? Do you currently exercise or follow a physical fitness program? Have your found that many of your co-workers don’t do anything to improve their health?

Believe it or not but you’re probably wasting your time exercising because they’re making every effort to sabotage your fitness goals any chance they get.

Just look around any corporate office and you’ll see that people come in all shapes and sizes.  There are probably a few people who hit the gym regularly, eat properly, and have a general concern for their health.

Then there are those (the great majority) who have less concern for their longevity, are frequently overweight, and always seem to have some sort of sickness that they are more than happy to spread around.

I was thinking about this lately and I’ve come up with a list of nightmare co-workers who want to put your health on hold.

1. The Cookie MonsterCookie monster

Nearly every week offices have birthday parties or celebrations which bring in the obligatory cakes, chocolates and cookies.

Want to do yourself a favor? Join the celebration but bring in your own healthy snacks and be a positive role model for everyone else.

Who knows, you might just find that others will see how good you are looking and start following your good habits.

2. Mr. “I’ll have a diet coke with a side of fat”

fast_food_killsFast food resturants are now trying to improve their image by offering “healthy” meals. The  problem with that is that people still like all the bad stuff!

I bet you know a guy like this in your office.  He’s the one that lives at every known fast food resturant within five miles of your workplace.

He’s also the one who takes the lunch orders for everyone and always seems to make sure that he orders everything on the menu plus the “ever so important” small diet coke.

This guy’s attitude will kill any chance of him ever being on the path to good health. And if you don’t watch out, he’ll try to take you along for the ride too.

3. The Beer Belly Butt Wad

Socializing with a co-worker can improve workplace relationships. But be careful when a beer after work turns into two or three or more.

The quickest way to sabatoge your figure is to turn into a “regular” at your local pub where everyone knows your name.

4. The creepy boss who makes you skip your lunch

fitness saboteurAll work and no “play” will make anyone a workaholic. Not eating enough throughout the day makes you a walking excuse for sick leave.

Skipping breakfast to arrive early for work and missing dinner to stay later after work might make you look good in the eyes of your boss…but it  will not only stall your fitness progress, it can also run you down and keep you home sick in bed.

Life is prescious.  The majority of people in this world aren’t getting enough exercise to begin with. They don’t care about their health.  Don’t let that happen to you.

Work smarter and not harder. Your success won’t come to you.  You must take action to be successful.

5. Couch Potato Mancouch potato guy

Having a best friend and co-worker who routinely makes excuses to avoid staying fit and tries to drag you down with them can be the worst temptation of all. Know when to say “NO”.

The difference between a healthy person and somone not so healthy is their ability to keep trying to overcome their obstacles.  If you can’t convince them to join you at the gym, then leave the friendship at work.

The majority of most co-workers aren’t getting enough exercise, have no concern for nutrition, carry around too much weight in their midsection and have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.  It’s time to put YOU ahead of everyone else.

Be a positive role model by showing others how you can resist temptations and still remain healthy and productive at your job.

Almost everyone wants to improve their circumstances yet they don’t want to improve themselves. Do what you can for others but don’t let them drag you down if you can’t.

Now I want to know something…

If you’ve been following this blog for awhile… I’m curious about something… what  kind of stories do you have to tell? Do you have co-workers like this?  Are you like this? … what have you tried in the past to encourage others to get fit, lean and healthy? What is it that makes you want to go to the gym day after day?

As a regular reader of this blog, I care about you…I really, really do…and I’d like to deliver quality information on a regular basis.  I want to give you what you need to know in order to reach your fitness goals.
